(09/2007) Vets Get Moving
Garswood United missed the regular weekly round of league fixtures to play their preliminary round match of the JB Parker Division One Challenge Cup on Saturday. Unfortunately, Styal put on an impressive performance to beat Garswood 4-0.
The season finally got underway for the Over 35's this Sunday in the BSF Football League. Despite having the luxury of the weekend off, the lads were eager to get going and forced through a fixture change with another team with a week off. So, Pineapple were the visitors to The Wooders in a morning kick-off and Garswood got things rolling with a solid 4-2 win thanks to goals from Yates and Smythe and two great solo efforts from Mark Prior.
Sunday also pitted two old adversaries from their time in the Warrington leagues against each other in the South Lancs League. Garswood Youth were away at Penlake Juniors, where previously the games have always been closely fought. Today's game was no exception with the single goal in it; unfortunately that spare goal meant a 2-1 loss and the first defeat of the season for the youth.

(09/2007) Win, Lose & Draw
Garswood United missed the regular weekly round of league fixtures to play their preliminary round match of the JB Parker Division One Challenge Cup on Saturday. Unfortunately, Styal put on an impressive performance to beat Garswood 4-0.
A mixed week for Garswood United Reserves saw them play two games in three days. After Garswood beating them on thier own pitch last week, Pilks took their revenge with a lucky 3-2 win here at The Wooders.
However, the Reserves didn't let the busy schedule get them down and again played at home on Saturday. This time they turned out a good 1-1 draw against Broadheath Central Reserves.
After Tuesdays abandoned match, Garswood Youth were eager to get on to the pitch but not before changing into Orange shirts due to a colour clash with the away team of Hawkley Hall. A footballing masterclass saw a dominating 6-1 win with a hatrick for Egerton, a brace for Damo and a goal of the day from Traynor. For the manager's full match report click here.

(08/2007) Match Abandoned
The Tuesday night home fixture for the Garswood Youth against Winstanley St Aidens Youth was barely 3 minutes old when an innocuous challenge between Mike Steadman and a Winstanley player left Steadman wreathing in agony. The site of Snowheads leg was a real sickener, his knee cap had moved around to the side of his leg.
Unable to move the player the ref was left with no option other to abandon the game whilst waiting for the ambulance to arrive, some 90 minutes after the incident!!
On behalf of all Garswood United AFC ..... Get well soon Mike.

(08/2007) Youthful Performance
An excellent start to the season, the players were asked before the game to lay a marker down to all other teams in the league and a 5 -2 win for the Garswood Youth was just the ticket!
As the first half progressed Garswood became more dominant looking sound in defence and strong in midfield. The opposition were very hard working and had clearly been told to harass and close down quickly. Initially this caused a problem with players being caught in possession and passes going astray.
The first goal was a penalty with Stu Kay being hacked down in the box, Damo Moore stepped up and coolly slotted to the keepers left. This was how the first half finished.
The equaliser came early in the second half with a player making a mazy run down the left leaving an out of sorts Collins in his wake a weak challenge from Alex Bradley allowed the striker to smash the ball past Robinson.
Garswood showed a good spirit as right from the kick off the ball was played to the right side to Steadman he played a nice ball to Naylor who was quick enough to beat his man and slid the ball past the keeper.
This lead was only short lived as the opposition attacked down the left the ball was chipped into the area Robinson should have dealt with the ball but he hesitated and allowed the striker to poke the ball past him.
Naylor was withdrawn due to a hip injury and Egerton was introduced to inject a bit of extra pace (Egerton lost his place in the starting 11 due to arriving 15 minutes late, with several new players in attendance an example was needed to be made)!
Garswood then started to apply pressure to a Redgate side who looked like they were starting to tire. The centre midfield partnership of Traynor and Moore began to run the show. A good move down the left resulted in a lovely pass from Coleman to Kay who was given time to turn and shoot from 25 yards catching the keeper off his line, the keeper could only watch as the ball sailed over his head into the net to give Garswood the lead for a third time.
From this point the game became more one sided with Garswood starting to dominate and the opposition starting to look like a beaten side. Another move saw Gannon with the ball on the left cross the ball into the penalty area the ball was cleared only as far as Coleman who must have heard the shouts of shoot from the crowd and his team mates. The goal was never in danger but the same cannot be said for the windows of houses adjacent to the pitch!!!
The fourth goal came from another move down the left between Coleman and Gannon, Gannon found himself on the edge of the area and a delightful chip saw the keeper stranded and the ball drop into the goal at the far post.
The final goal came with a couple of minutes remaining A corner from the right saw Steadman make a near post run and got his head on the ball before a static defence could move and nod the ball over the line. JOB DONE!
The game was played in a good spirit no bookings for either side!
Man of Match was awarded to Andy Dickson who played his best game for quite a while, Dominant in the air, strong in the tackle and what was most pleasing was the improvement in his distribution which was excellent today! Looks like he has been watching and learning from his hero Chris Burke (Poor lad)!
Thanks to manager Steve Dickson for this match report.

(08/2007) Garswood Reserves Kick-off
The goals were late to arrive in Garswood Reserves first fixture of the season against Styal. Steve Brogan made it 1-0 to the Wooders in the 70th minute, but Styal realising they were short on time, turned the game around as Paul Adkin pulled them level with 8 minutes left to play. Danny Gregory then put Styal ahead four minutes later before Leigh Tueart made it 3-1 with almost the last kick of the game.
Garswood United faced Woodley in the other game of the day. Two first half goals saw Woodley take a comfortable lead into the break but Garswood started the second half strongly as Mike Scully pulled one back in the 46th minute. The two teams battled it out but it was to be Woodley celebrating the victory as they made it 3-1 with five minutes left on the clock.

(08/2007) Garswood Top The Table!
Garswood United took maximum points from their opening game.
Mike Scully gave Garswood the lead mid way through the first half, finding the end of a superb through ball from Steve Edwards. Chris Burke doubled their lead, three minutes from the break, with a spectaular shot from 25 yards which deceived the Gamesley goalkeeper. Carl Addison provided the cross which saw Steve Edwards bag the third in the 90th minute, putting the icing on the top of his match winning performance.
The result puts Garswood United top of the table after the first game. Not even just on the basis of alphabetical listing... we're top by a whole one goal on goal difference!! Well done for the winning start lads.

(07/2007) New Season, New Clubhouse
Finally, the new Wooders clubhouse is ready to embrace its first season. Garswood has always been proud to offer officials and away teams the best league facilities possible. Last season, against the odds, we managed to survive in a portacabin; this season we are back at full strength with the full Wooders hospitality back in service
Good luck to all teams, staff and players representing Garswood this season. Let's get some silverware in that trophy cabinet in the new club!
